Recent internal data shows $800 million in rural property, ranches and hunting land for sale in the Yellowhammer State. This represents some 201,982 acres of land for sale in the state. The most expensive property listed for sale on Lands of America recently was $62 million, although the median price for land, ranches and farms in Idaho came in at $803,300. The average price of land advertised for sale in Idaho was $1 million. Idahoans take full advantage of their natural resources, with over half of the state's residents having fished and some 35 percent having hunted within a two-year span. All told, hunting, fishing, and trapping activities generate over $1 billion for the Idaho economy. And it's not just the local who are in on the secret. Visitors flock to the state for world-class skiing, backpacking and whitewater rafting and among other outdoor adventures. In terms of size, Idaho is the country's 14th-largest state, covering an area of 83,574 square miles (53 million acres). In total, 82,643 square miles (99 percent) of the state is land, while the remaining 926 square miles is made up of water. Over half the land in Idaho is public land such as state parks, forestland or state and other federally protected land. As befits a state with excellent hunting for big and small game like deer, waterfowl and wild turkey, hunting land was the most common type of land for sale in Idaho. The financial publication Kiplinger has ranked the state among the ten best states for retirees based on factors including property and income taxes, health care and cost of living. The state has also been ranked among the ten best states for the cost of living by U.S. News & World Report. Of the 44 counties in Idaho, Kootenai County had the most land for sale.
